About Hoan Kiem:
A focal point of the city, Hoan Kiem Lake is a popular area where locals gather to meet, practise tai chi, and drink tea. It's where you'll find festivals, evening romance and the mystical Ngoc Son Temple, located in the centre of the lake on an island. It's also the location of the old city and still exudes an ambiance of times gone by. The Pho Co or 36 streets originally designated to 36 trade guilds, remain. Many of the guilds have left but brisk trading is still done among the locals and tourists along streets like Hang Dao, better known as " street of silk " and Hang Quat (Street of Fans) selling Buddhist relics.
Situated on the Red River (Song Hong) Hanoi provides a complete contrast to bustling Ho Chi Min City. The capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is more like a quiet charming provincial town with its lakes, shady boulevards and pleasant public parks. Wander around the centre and you’ll see fine old buildings. For an insight into Vietnam, visit the history Museum which charts the evolution of the country, from pre-historic days to the rise of the Communist Party.
Around 120 kilometres south-west of Hanoi lies the Cuc Phuong National Park - one of the last tropical primeval forest reserves on Earth which contains rare plants and animals, many of which are extinct everywhere else in the world. Approximately 120km southwest of Hanoi. The capital's cafes, graceful lakes and ancient pagodas help generate a slower pace than that of thriving Saigon.
