About Dien Bien Phu City:
Dien Bien Phu City is alive with colour, as the Vietnamese, Thai and H'Mong residents go about their daily affairs like carrying their wares into city, shopping in the crowded market, and holding xoe dancing parties in their stilt houses. These people, whose cultures are as different as their clothing styles, share the same warmth and hospitality for tourists. Dien Bien Phu is a historic site and the natural scenery is stunning. But it is the city's forward looking people who make a trip to Dien Bien Phu truly memorable.
Deep in the highlands of north-west Vietnam, close to the Laos border, Dien Bien Phu is one the remotest spots in Vietnam. Strangely it is also the place that changed the course of history and marks the site of the decisive French defeat by the Viet Minh - leading to the end of French colonial rule in Indochina. A museum now occupies the battle site. The French commander's HQ has been re-created, and the old Moung Thahn Bridge has been preserved. The journey from Hanoi usually stops at Son La - carefully winding through the highlands, but there is a small airport just outside the town.
